The United Nations has officially declared 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. The UN has set this year to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of quantum mechanics. Quantum mechanics is the core physical theory that explains the unusual characteristics that are observed at the atomic and subatomic levels.
This global initiative aims to raise awareness of quantum mechanics as a basis of modern science and to strengthen education and international collaboration in the field of quantum innovation.
Quantum science is getting attention from industries due to the great technologies such as quantum computing, quantum sensing, and quantum communication, which promise speed, precision, and security. Governments and leading companies worldwide are using this year to increase investment in research and to cultivate the next generation of quantum scientists and engineers.
South Korea, among other nations, has identified quantum technology as a national strategic priority. Korea is actively supporting projects in quantum semiconductors and quantum cryptography, aiming to become a leader in the emerging quantum era. As 2025 comes to an end, this initiative is anticipated to connect advanced quantum research with real-world use, making quantum technology more accessible in daily life.
