AI has recently become capable of creating poems, stories, and scripts quickly, which can feel discouraging to human creators. But new research from Ohio State University shows that AI-generated art lacks the depth of human creativity.

The study found that large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT don’t truly understand sensory experiences. Humans can smell a rose or touch a flower, but AI has no body or senses. Without these experiences, AI cannot fully capture the richness of such concepts.

Researchers tested AI’s understanding of emotional, visual, and physical ideas. While AI can use words well, it struggles to connect them to real sensory experiences. Cognitive scientist Mark Runco explains, “AI often produces shallow and hollow results because it lacks rich sensory input.”

Some AI trained with images and videos perform better in visual expression than text-only models but still fall short of human multi-sensory experience. Humans process sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste together, while AI treats these senses separately.

Future AI may improve by using sensors and robotics to interact physically with the world. However, AI will likely never experience emotions, memories, or self-awareness like humans do.

Human creativity is deeply connected to personal memories and feelings triggered by senses—something AI cannot replicate. This is why AI art, though impressive, lacks the emotional depth and authenticity found in human creations.
