E-Cigarette Aerosols Linked to Third-Hand Exposure and Health Risks

Particles released from e-cigarettes may remain in indoor environments long after use and contribute to ongoing health risks, according to a recent review study. Researchers report that e-cigarette aerosols can attach to surfaces such as walls and furniture, creating what is known as third-hand exposure.
These aerosols contain ultrafine particles, including nicotine, heavy metals, and other toxic substances. Because of their small size, the particles can stay suspended in the air and later settle on indoor surfaces. Even after ventilation, they may persist for extended periods, increasing the likelihood of indirect exposure among non-users, including children and pets.
The study also examined the direct effects of e-cigarette use on the human body. Findings indicate that exposure may negatively affect multiple systems, including the lungs, cardiovascular system, metabolism, and brain. In particular, the particles were associated with damage to blood vessel cells, which may increase the risk of high blood pressure and arterial stiffness. In the brain, they were linked to disrupted energy metabolism and inflammatory responses that could impair cognitive function.
The research team, led by Professor Byun Min Kwang of Gangnam Severance Hospital in collaboration with researchers from Ohio State University and the University of California, San Diego, analyzed more than 140 studies published over the past 20 years.
The authors conclude that e-cigarette emissions may contribute not only to individual health risks but also to broader air pollution, highlighting the need for greater awareness and further investigation.
