Jeonbuk Hyundai wins 1-0 over Gimcheon Sangmu

On May 16th, 2026, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors played their last game before the long World Cup break against Gimcheon Sangmu at Jeonju World Cup Stadium. The match sold out for the second time since 2025, as fans were also excited for a concert by Korean band JANNABI after the game. The first sold-out match also featured JANNABI, where they appeared at the stadium and performed during halftime against Ulsan HD FC on May 31st, 2025. This match was important for both sides, as Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors were trying to remain in third place, while Gimcheon Sangmu had the chance to take advantage in the tight mid-table race, where only a few points separated several teams.
Both teams showed strong control and intensity from the beginning of the match. However, Jeonbuk had more chances created and more expected goals during the match, but many of their attacks were stopped by Gimcheon Sangmu goalkeeper and defenders. Jeonbuk’s goalkeeper Song Bum Keun also had a strong performance as usual, making important saves to stop most of Gimcheon Sangmu’s shots. The match remained 0–0 until the very end, with both teams unable to find a breakthrough until the 90+7th minute, when Jeonbuk was awarded a direct free kick. The ball was crossed to the penalty area, and Jeonbuk’s striker Tiago Orobo took control of the ball and scored the winning goal for Jeonbuk. The game ended right after the game came back to play, giving Jeonbuk 3 points and a 1-0 win.
This match was very difficult for both sides, as neither team could score from the chances they had. However, Jeonbuk eventually found a way through in the final minutes of the game, scoring the winning goal and securing the 1-0 victory. This match was played right before the World Cup break, and Jeonbuk had two players called up to the national team, including Song Bum-keun, who was selected for his excellent shot-stopping and consistent performances. Kim Jin-kyu was also included, continuing his regular involvement with the national team due to his strong and reliable performances as a midfielder.
