NASA Turns Names Into Satellite Images With Interactive Tool

NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) have introduced an interactive online project that allows users to see their names recreated using real satellite images of Earth. Called “Your Name in Landsat,” the tool has attracted attention by combining space technology with a personalized experience.


The project uses images collected by the Landsat satellite program, which has continuously observed Earth's surface since 1972. After a user enters a name, the system searches through thousands of satellite images and matches natural landforms to individual letters of the alphabet. Rivers, glaciers, forests, deserts, and agricultural fields are used to create unique letter shapes.


According to NASA, every letter displayed comes from an actual location on Earth. Users can click on each image to view where it was taken, allowing them to explore different regions around the world while learning about satellite observation.


The tool is based on pareidolia, a psychological phenomenon in which people recognize familiar shapes in unrelated objects or patterns. By applying this concept to satellite imagery, the project transforms scientific data into a more engaging and accessible format for the public.


Beyond its entertainment value, the project also highlights the importance of the Landsat program. For more than 50 years, Landsat satellites have provided scientists with valuable information about environmental changes, including urban growth, deforestation, glacier retreat, and shifts in water resources.


Current Landsat satellites revisit most locations on Earth approximately every eight days and collect data across multiple wavelengths. This information helps researchers monitor vegetation health, land temperatures, and long-term environmental trends.


NASA hopes that projects such as “Your Name in Landsat” will encourage more people to explore Earth observation science. By turning something as simple as a name into a collection of real satellite images, the project offers a creative way to connect the public with the technology used to study our changing planet.
