South Korea and Italy Strengthen Cooperation in Future Technologies

President Lee Jae-myung met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome on June 12. During the meeting, the two leaders signed four Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) to increase cooperation between South Korea and Italy.
One of the agreements focuses on science and technology. The two countries agreed to work together in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), quantum technology, biotechnology, life science, and space technology. They will also create a Joint Committee on Science and Technology to support these projects.
South Korea and Italy also signed a Development Cooperation MOU. Through this agreement, they plan to carry out farming and digital education projects in African countries, including Uganda, Ethiopia, Egypt, and Côte d’Ivoire.
In addition, the two countries signed a Social Solidarity Economy MOU and another MOU to support small and medium-sized businesses. They hope to combine Italy’s manufacturing skills with South Korea’s technology and innovation.
The two leaders also approved the 2026–2030 Korea–Italy Strategic Action Plan. This plan will help increase cooperation in advanced industries, defense, crime prevention, and cultural exchange.
These agreements are expected to strengthen the relationship between South Korea and Italy and create more opportunities for future cooperation.
