A fishing boat accident occurred off the coast of Cheollipo near Taean County in South Chungcheong Province on the evening of December 4, 2025. The vessel was a small fishing boat of about 9.77 tons and was registered in Incheon. At the time of the accident there were seven people on board including the captain and six crew members. The boat had been operating in the waters off Taean when it suddenly capsized at around 6:20 in the evening.
According to the Coast Guard the sea conditions at the time were very dangerous. Strong winds were blowing and high waves were reported in the area. A strong wind advisory and a high wave warning had already been issued earlier that day. The waves were estimated to reach about two meters in height and visibility was poor due to rough weather. These conditions are believed to have played a major role in the accident although the exact cause has not yet been officially confirmed.
Soon after the accident was reported the Taean Coast Guard launched an emergency rescue operation. Multiple patrol boats rescue ships and helicopters were sent to the scene. Firefighters navy units and local police also joined the search. The rescue teams searched both the sea and nearby coastline throughout the night under very difficult conditions. During the early stage of the operation three crew members were found alive floating in the water. They were rescued and transferred to a hospital where they were treated for hypothermia. Their condition was reported to be stable. However, four people including the captain were still missing. The search continued for two more days across a wide area of the sea and along the shore. Two bodies were recovered the following day and the final missing persons were found later near the coastline. All four missing crew members were confirmed dead. After the final recovery the large scale rescue operation was officially ended.
The authorities have now begun a full investigation into the cause of the capsizing. They are examining weather conditions the condition of the boat and whether safety rules were properly followed. Officials stated that it is important to determine whether the accident could have been prevented. This tragedy has brought deep sorrow to the local fishing community and once again raised concerns about the safety of small fishing boats operating in severe weather conditions.
