The Samsung Lions finished re-signing 68 players on January 26. Won Tae-in renewed his contract with a salary of 1 billion won, which is the highest on the team. It has been eight years since he debuted in the KBO. He is one of the best starting pitchers in the league, recording the most wins in 2024. In 2025, he recorded 20 quality starts and 12 wins. Won Tae-in has pitched more than 150 innings each season since 2021, showing great consistency.

Won Tae-in will become a free agent next year. The Samsung Lions are promoting a multi-year contract extension to prevent him from becoming a free agent. Other KBO teams would have to pay the Samsung Lions 3 billion won if they wanted to sign Won Tae-in as a free agent. It seems that the Samsung Lions have created a high entry barrier by offering a 1 billion won salary.

Won Tae-in is keeping the door open to playing in Japan or the USA in the future. The Samsung Lions do not want to prevent him from going abroad, but they are trying to block him from joining other domestic clubs. The upcoming WBC will be important for Won Tae-in, as it will give him a chance to showcase his performance.
