North Korea launched multiple ballistic missiles toward the sea on April 19. This came shortly after South Korea reported, following warnings from the U.N. nuclear watchdog, that North Korea was making significant progress in developing nuclear weapons. The incident marked North Korea’s seventh ballistic missile launch this year and its fourth launch in April.
The missiles were fired from near the city of Sinpo on North Korea’s east coast, flew about 140 kilometers (87 miles), and were launched at about 6:10 a.m. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff stated that South Korea remains fully prepared to respond to any provocations from North Korea and is in close coordination, sharing information with the United States and Japan.
In an emergency meeting of the National Security Council, senior South Korean officials expressed concern over North Korea’s repeated ballistic missile tests and strongly called on it to stop them immediately.
The U.S. and Japanese militaries also said they detected the launches. The U.S. Indo-Pacific Command said it continues to support the defense of the United States and its regional allies. Japan’s Defense Ministry said Tokyo strongly objected to Pyongyang, saying the launches threatened regional and global peace and violated United Nations Security Council resolutions banning ballistic missile activities by North Korea.
Some analysts believe North Korea’s recent missile launches were intended to strengthen its position ahead of future diplomatic talks with the United States. Trump is expected to travel to Beijing in May for a summit with Xi Jinping, which could create another chance for negotiations involving North Korea.
Meanwhile, International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi said there had been a rapid increase in activity at North Korea’s nuclear facilities. He warned that these developments indicate a serious expansion of the country’s nuclear weapons production capabilities.
